TRETIAK: the legend
written by Vladislav Tretiak !!!
with a foreword by Wayne Gretzky
Vladislav Tretiak. This is the man who stunned the NHL "dream team" in the first game of the 1972 Canada-USSR series, and went on to become a household name to North American hockey fans.
Throughout his career, this amazing goaltender baffled the greatest forwards of Europe and North America with his icy concentration and machine-like efficiency. After the first Soviet victory of the '72 Series, Frank Mahovlich commented:
"It's almost like Tretiak can foresee my every move in advance. It's like we've played together since childhood."
TRETIAK: The Legend is a revealing look at the man behind the mask.
It is a fascinating autobiographical account of the life of one of the world's greatest goaltenders. Tretiak recounts his goaltending career from his early childhood, through his training with the coach Anatoly Tarasov and his years on the Central Army and National teams, until his retirement in 1984. He offers an insider's look at hockey, and life, in the Soviet Union. Tretiak also shares his insight-ful, often controversial opinions of North American hockey. He writes of the Central Army team's encounter with Fred Shero's Philadelphia Flyers: “I didn't know that a pack of barbarians could put on skates and get away with hunting hockey players in front of thousands of people.”
